A COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP

It’s odd. I started working on this piece in September 2019, when I initially had to present my work as curator during a talk. Back then, I had no idea of what 2020 would be like. I had no idea that I would spend more than two months at home, waiting for society to go back to normal. Looking back at the content I selected for this piece, I’m now wondering whether my perception of what ‘botanical’ means has changed at all.

Much of what was talked about last year in terms of nature focused on sustainability and our (toxic) relationship with mother earth. It had to do with us trying to defend the earth and its ecosystem as much as possible, as we were close to a point of no return. It would be up to us, the glorious human race, to make sure that we didn’t end the world. In the space of a few months that has changed. We have been put in our place and shown how fragile we really are. How our societies and structures can almost collapse from one day to the next. We are now the ones locked up, with nature and its ecosystem flourishing and thriving around us.

The five films below are meant to provide an overview of our complicated relationship with nature. Something whose beauty we appreciate, love and are part of. Something that we know we have to safeguard. And something that can also teach us a humbling lesson and remind us that we are not omnipotent.

È strano. Ho cominciato a lavorare su questo pezzo a settembre 2019, quando ho presentato il mio lavoro come video curator durante un talk. Allora non avevo idea di cosa sarebbe successo nel 2020. No sapevo che sarei stato a casa per più di due mesi, aspettando che la società tornasse alla normalità. Riguardando i contenuti che avevo selezionato per questo pezzo, mi chiedo se la mia percezione di cosa vuol dire ‘botanical’ sia cambiata.

Si è parlato molto di natura l’anno scorso. Ci siamo concentrati su concetti di sostenibilità e sulla nostra relazione (tossica) con madre natura. Il discorso aveva molto a che fare con la difesa della terra ed il nostro ecosistema, e di come fossimo arrivati ad un punto di non ritorno. Saremmo stati noi, la gloriosa razza umana, a doverci assicurare di non distruggere il mondo. In un paio di mesi tutto questo è cambiato. Siamo stati messi al nostro posto e ci è stato dimostrato quanto siamo fragili e come la nostra società possa collassare da un giorno all’altro. Siamo noi adesso quelli rinchiusi, mentre la natura ed il suo ecosistema sembrano prosperare senza di noi.

I cinque film selezionati vogliono dare un overview della nostra complicata relazione con la natura. Qualcosa la cui bellezza apprezziamo, amiamo e di cui vogliamo farne parte. Qualcosa che vogliamo proteggere. E qualcosa capace di insegnarci un’importante lezione e ricordarci che non siamo onnipotenti.
