SOAPOPERA MEETS AARE SWIM

// // The summer essential

AN INTERVIEW BY FEDERICA CIUCI PRIORI

Close you eyes.
The bush, the ocean, the endless sky and the long sunsets.
You can feel it, the smell of the sea on your skin, the sand between your hands.
You and your friends lying on the shore, early morning swims, the weather is warm, the water is calm and life is so easy.
A fantasy? A fairytale? No, this is the real life of the couple behind our favorite summer label: an honest, essential and pure line of amazing timeless swimsuits.
We fell in love with their aestethic through their journal, (their instagram account is pretty awesome too!) a big dreamy postcard that reminds you a world where the morning is blue and bright, the fabric of your bikini is soft and comfortable and you are free to enjoy the beach life feeling beautiful, friendly and self-confident.
Meet Aare: our aussie crush made of shells and dreams.

Federica. Ciao guys! Who are the people behind Aare? Tell us something about you and about your beautiful project.
Aare. We are Lucy and James, partners in business and in life. We decided to launch Aare after realising a pretty significant gap in the market for swimwear that is tasteful, elegant, timeless. Furthermore, swimwear that could be applied to a whole host of different body shapes. Our aim was to create staple pieces with clean lines and a minimal colour palette. A couple of years back Lucy found herself buying a bikini from a London swimwear designer because there was a lack of simply designed, refined pieces in Australia. We both realised how silly that was, buying from the UK when we live in a country that boasts sunshine and warm weather and glorious beaches. That was how it all started.

F. Describes Aare in 3 words
A. Simple, refined, inclusive.

F.You say that you draw your inspiration from the key features of the Australian landscapes: the bush, the ocean and the endless sky.. tell us about your everyday life! Do you have an office by the beach or the beach is your office?
A.
We lead very busy lives, we both work full time while simultaneously managing Aare. We live 5 minutes from a glorious beach and have a studio space in the heart of Fremantle, which is small coastal town. The Australian climate is a big influence for us, the weather is sublime in summer and the lifestyle that is attached to the summer months is centred on being outdoors; like early morning swims before work and dinner under the stars at night. Western Australia is an amazing state, the landscape changes radically the further you drive (or fly). We have spent a lot of time on the road and love the bush and desert scrub, the big blue sky and the long sunsets. It’s all very inspiring to us.

F. Why have you decided to design a swimwear line instead of anything else?
A. Swimwear is a necessary part of the wardrobe here! We spend time at the beach 6-7 months out of the year, therefore owning a swimsuit that makes you feel comfortable is essential.

F. In order to be special, how a swimwear should be?
A. Before starting Aare, we noticed how so many swimwear labels available in Australia focused on loud patterns or garish colours or gimmicky designs. Beauty is important to us and we wanted to create something with integrity and enduring style.

F.You are our Aussie crush made of shells and dreams, and your stories always give us life: how important is the photographic vision in you aestethic?
A. A big part of what we do is based around the photographic vision. As we said before, our native landscape is endlessly inspiring, we strive to showcase some of its beauty in Aare. We also like to feature lots of different photographers –  we select the work of a different photographer from Australia or overseas and integrate their photos with our swimwear shoots. It’s pretty exciting working all these talented people, it keeps Aare from getting static too.

F. Are all those amazing locations in the pictures near to your homeplace? If yes, how does it feels to live surrounded by all that natural beauty?
A. Lots of the locations in our shoots are shot close to home. Some of them are taken on the road. The word that comes to mind is ‘rewarding’. The coast is something very special to us, we love experiencing its changes throughout the seasons. Summer is blue and bright, the water is warm and very calm. There is almost no breeze in the mornings so the ocean is very flat, no waves at all. Winter is very different, the wind screams off the water and there are big white waves crashing. It’s freezing cold but exhilarating.

F. Tell us about the girl of your dream.. Who are the muses in your editorials? Who are the young women who buy your items?
A.
I’m not sure that we could classify the girl of ours dreams. We use many friends in our editorials, real girls with real style. I guess it comes down to honesty, in the end. We try to avoid stereotypical women or artificial settings, we want what is genuine.

F. If Aare were a movie, which one would be?
A.
Hmm… that is the most difficult question so far. Perhaps ‘Lost in Translation’ meets ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’?

F. Have you ever been in Italy? If you have to choose an Italian beach location for your one of your stories, which one will you choose?
A.
Yes we have been to Italy many times, both separately and together. It’s such a beautiful country, we would love to do a shoot there sometime. We would probably choose a beach with lots of rocks and pebbles, something very unique to Italy and entirely different to our sandy coastline.
